This past year was full of a lot of new experiences for me. One of
the very first things I ever tried to do was to pick my head up. That
actually went pretty well, but I couldn't keep it up for very long - cuz
I was only a day old. The very next day, though, I tried to turn my head
from side to side - I was getting tired of always seeing the same old thing!
It worked too - I was a strong little guy :)...on my third day I tried to
roll over. That didn't go as well. I only made if from my back on to my
left side, but I'm no quitter, and by the time I was seven days old I had
had done it! And by the time I was 25 days old I had mastered holding my
head up - a baby gets tired of snuffling blankets, you know?
It's hard to say just when I started trying to talk, because I pretty much
came out gabbin' and haven't really stopped since. It's a good thing too, cuz
this talking thing takes is a lot of work! It took me 11 months just to say
the word "up"...I was beginning to think sign language was going to be my only hope!
It was round about August when I decided I was ready to try some new things, like
forward movement and flying through the air - weee, what fun that was :)! It was
also around that time that I got tired of always slumping over and started trying
to sit up straight. Oooh, and you'll never guess what happened when I did - I found
out I have these things at the end of my long things that have a bunch of small
wiggly things on them. Boy how I wanted to get those things in my mouth :)! And
I finally did, too, a couple of months later...
It was round about September that I decided I needed to start working on a way to
keep up with Mommy. I was tired of her always leaving me behind to walk across the
room, so I started pushing my upper body off the ground. It took a bit of effort,
but by October I had finally gotten the whole belly up, and by the end of the month
I was crawling. Took long enough, I had almost given up hope and had already tried
pulling myself onto my feet - walking, crawling, it was all the same to me :)! I
quickly discovered that walking was going to take a bit more work, though, cuz I wasn't
able to do that for another six months.
In November I tried food for the first time. Not my idea, but Mommy gave it to me
and it wasn't bad - a little bland, but not bad. I still don't know what it was, but
I let her know that I'd rather have something with a little more flavor to it, and few
weeks later she started feeding me some colorful stuff. That was better than the white
mushy stuff, but still not what I was wanting. But she finally figured it out - because
I kept pushing it away - and started feeding me some of that stuff she used to eat while
I was in her belly. Yum, yum, I sure do love that red stuff that goes on those squiggly
things :)!
In November I also decided it was time to tackle the stair case - good thing it's a short
one - it took me three weeks just to make it up the first step! Of course, five days
after that I had made it up all three. Once you've mastered climbing one, they're all
pretty much the same after that. A few weeks later I decided to apply my new skill to
to climbing on to the futon. It's about twice as high, but it worked! Ding, ding, ding -
that what was started me on my climb to new and higher places...It took me until
January to figure out how to get back down again, though. Thank goodness for those
big people! My latest accomplishments had had me feeling brave, so I decided to go
outside without holding Mommy's hand. Wow, what a rush that was - I was ready to
conquer the world!
And so I set out to do just that. That same day I decided to "take the bull by
the horns" and hold my own bottle while I ate. Woo Hoo, independence here I come!
Then, the very next morning I saw a round thing that I liked and, you guessed it, I
went and got it all on my own. I was on a roll...a couple of days later I got myself
out of bed and went and found me one of those big people, rather than lying in bed
crying for them to come to me. The one that I found, the Mommy person, she was all
smiling and laughing, so I must've done a good thing :)!
It was the next month, after I'd reached my eighth month, that I decided I was
tired of this crawling thing. Those big people were always moving way more faster
than I was, so I decided to try moving around like they do. At first, it wasn't
easy - I had to hold two hands in order to keep my balance. But just two short
weeks later and I was able to take my first solo step. And, by my tenth month
birthday I was gettin' around on all twos :)!
Nowadays I just try anything and everything I can think of, like opening doors,
taking the lids off of my kitchen toys, and splashing water where ever I can find
it - and there's always a big bowl full just waiting in the room where I take my
baths, too :). Ahhh, life is good. It'll be nice when I'm too big for those big
people to keep me out of things (like that big bowl of water I mentioned), but I
think, all-in-all, this baby thing ain't so bad.
