Week Two
Palmer loves cuddling with Big Mama
and Big Papa isn't doing to bad either...

June 10,2005
Today I was christened an official mother - Palmer peed on me
for the first time. This is the second day in a row that Palmer has
spent a significant amount of time in an alert state. Today it was
four hours. I hope this is a trend - I like it when he's awake.

Palmer rolled over from his belly onto his back today!
I've hence dubbed him "My Little Bam-Bam." His skin has also started to peel.
Right now it's mainly on his feet but, I'm assured that it will
eventually happen all over his body...

Well, my milk is definitely "in." Palmer woke up crying and I felt
something cool dripped onto my foot. It took me a moment to realize where
it was coming from...my left breast.

June 12, 2005
Today was Palmer's first really bad day...He woke up lying in his
own spit up with diarrhea filling his diaper. So, I cleaned him up and
brought him to my breast. His mouth was so slimy that he had a hard time
latching on...we were off to a bad start...

Finally got the little guy fed and back to sleep; laid him down around 10:30.
An hour later he wakes up - again lying in spit up and filling his diaper but,
bright-eyed and content...At this point I'm hoping that he's gotten whatever
was making him icky out of his system. Two bouts of diarrhea is enough even
for a big person!

So much for hope...this time he only stayed asleep for about 30 minutes.
The good news is that he didn't wake up in spit up or poop, he just woke up.
He did spit up a little after waking but, not enough to worry about.
This round of wakefulness lasted the rest of the day and into the night.
Since what he had spit up was formula I strictly fed him breastmilk for the
rest of the day but, regardless of how much I fed him, cuddled with him, and
played with him, sleep just wasn't to be had. It was at 11:00 p.m. that I
remembered that The Baby Book (my favorite resource on baby care) says
that chamomile is safe for babies. So, I laced a bottle of formula with about a
teaspoon of chamomile tea - it soothes the tummy and makes one sleepy. It worked
like a charm! Not only did Palmer finally get some sleep, he stayed out for a
full nap. The rough time has ended!

June 13, 2005
Palmer is back to normal today - yeah!
Full naps throughout the night and morning...whew, we made it!
At our WIC appointment today the nutritionist suggested that I use distilled
water in his formula rather than tap in order to prevent days like yesterday
from recurring. So, Big Mama and I bought some distilled water and the next
bottle of formula stayed down without a problem...

June 14, 2005
This is the day of Palmer's circumcision. Something tells me that
we're in for another rough day or two...

The procedure went very smoothly. After the doctor injected the anesthesia
into Palmer's penis he was very calm and patient throughout the rest of the operation.
However, once the anesthesia wore off there was no consoling him. Thankfully that
only lasted for about a half hour though and then he was fast asleep. He remained
asleep through what the doctor said would be the most painful period for him -
the first 2-3 hours after the anesthesia quit working. All will be well.
In fact, mama and baby should both be completely healed around the same time...

As of today Palmer weighs 9lbs, 5oz. He's a'growin'!

June 15, 2005
Palmer's penis appears to be healing quickly.
His wet diapers have stopped making him scream but the poopy ones still sting.
He isn't very happy about diaper changes these days, but that's because he has to
be on his back for them - something that just annoys him to no end! Kind of sucks
for the folks who are trying to sleep at night but, it will all be over in a few days.
Sleeping is a little tough - only short 1 hour naps all day - but that's because he
insists on sleeping on his belly. The trouble is that he stretches out his legs and
ends up laying flat upon his penis - instant wake up - ouch!

June 16, 2005
Today was pretty much the same as yesterday.
Boy, how I wish he would sleep...nothing to do but bear with it, though...
I'm sure he's feeling even more miserable than I am.
